Hammonds Valley View Farm

Hi, we are Phil and Theresa Hammond from Plainwell, Michigan. We are proud owners of Valley View Farm, established in 1897 and located in the beautiful southwestern part of the state. Our journey into the world of goats began in 2008, when we initially focused entirely on dairy goats. Throughout the years, we also cared for horses, cattle, and pasture pigs, contributing to the diverse life on our farm. Together, Theresa and I managed approximately 75 acres of both farm and crop land, nurturing it with dedication and hard work.

In 2018, however, we faced a significant change and needed to temporarily put the farm on hold to provide care for my aging parents and support our family during this time. As a result of this transition, we made the difficult decision to lease out all the crop land and sell the goats, along with most of our other animals. A couple of years later, after fulfilling our caregiving responsibilities, we found ourselves in a position to return to our true passion—raising goats.

At that time, we decided to pivot from dairy goats to raising meat goats, while keeping a couple of dairy goats for Theresa’s soap-making business. During our search for suitable meat goat breeds, we discovered Savannas, which piqued our interest significantly. Thus, in 2021, we embarked on building our herd again, this time with a focus on Savanna goats. The experience of working with these remarkable animals and meeting the wonderful people in the community has been incredibly rewarding. As we look ahead, we are filled with optimism and excitement for the future of the Savanna goat industry. Thank you for taking the time to learn about our journey.
